Child Language and Speech Database and Information Repository

GABI (Gyermeknyelvi beszédAdatBázis és Információtár; Child Language and Speech Database and Information Repository) is a multi-purpose speech database which is under development. The purpose of this database is to record the speech of Hungarian common language speaking children, and to provide material forresearch.

The aim of the project is to record speech of children and adolescents aged between 3 and 18. In every age groups speech of 50-50 speakers will be recorded. The importance of GABI is huge, because there hasn’t been any children’s speech database of this kind in Hungarian as regards the number of speakers and the variety of speech tasks. A recording takes approximately 30-40 minutes per child. The speech recordings are currently being transcribed (by Transcriber).

The GABI database is being developed in the Phonetics Department of Eötvös Loránd University. In the development, the members of the Child Language Research Group who are the department's faculty colleagues, doctoral students and graduate students participate. Project leader: Judit Bóna Ph.D. senior lecturer. For list of developers click here.

The protocol of the recordings

Before the recordings, the purpose of the database and the process of the recordings are described to the parents, and they are asked to give a written consent to record their child’s speech. In addition, parents are asked to fill in a detailed patient history (anamnesis). In this there are questions about the circumstances of the child's birth, social situation and the development of their speech and the factors influencing it. Recordings can only start after having received the signed consent (according to the Hungarianlaw) and the completed anamnesis.

Depending on the child’s age, different versions of the protocol is developed (based on the BEA – Hungarian spoken language database; http://www.nytud.hu/dbases/bea/index.html). There are two main versions: one for children between 3 and 9; another one for adolescents between 9 and 18. In the group of 9-year-old children recordings are made according to both protocols.

3. Definition of 20 words/phrases.

4. Recall of a heard text.

5. Reading aloud of sentences and a text (from the second class).

6. Story-telling based on a series of pictures.
